About Laura

Laura is a designer leading Design Exploration at Signify. Over the years she has been involved in various visionary projects exploring the future of lighting and start-ups, bringing the humanizing voice of design to technology. Her mission is to humanize lighting and contribute to shaping the future.

Designing sustainable lighting

Laura believes 3D printing is the answer to creating sustainable lighting solutions, with the technology enabling us to bring manufacturing home - closer to the market and the designers. This allows designers to become fully immersed in the manufacturing process, resulting in the creation of exciting new forms, textures, and lighting effects.

According to her, it gives designers the opportunity to “accelerate the use of recycled and bio-based materials” and be “change agents for manufacturing”. Laura and her team are exploring with printing different materials and collaborating with partners and suppliers in the 3D printing eco-system.

The team is creating designs that are in Laura’s words, “beautiful, functional, and sustainable, so that people can enjoy beautiful lighting in a sustainable way."

Shaping the future of lighting

Laura joined the Philips MyCreation team to bring a strong focus on design and create a new portfolio for home lighting. “We began by talking to people about their homes and the role light plays in their lives,” she explains.

These conversations and insights served as the starting point for the development of the new Philips MyCreation lighting collections. As a designer, Laura is inspired by the process of 3D printing. Watching the lamps gradually building up, layer by layer, according to her is like “ a futuristic biological process of emergence and growth,” that gives her an optimistic feeling about the future.

Laura enjoys the entrepreneurial start-up feeling in the team, and the way 3D printing changes the possibilities for Design, and the team works together to shape and refine them, printing several versions before they are satisfied.

“That’s the beauty of 3D printing; you can make a change, press ‘play’ and within hours you can have the product in your hands. This is a real game changer enabling us to shape the future of lighting”, she says. “And it is moving fast, and I am truly excited about it!”.
